Yamaha RD250
Replacing the hugely successful YDS7, Yamaha's RD250 was introduced in 1973. Featuring a 247cc 2-stroke twin with reed valve induction and a 6-speed gearbox, early models sported a front drum brake, though this gave way to a single disc setup on later machines. RD stood for 'race developed' and they really were, many similarities being shared with then current air cooled Yamaha TD race bikes. Many British 17 year olds cut their motorcycling teeth on an RD250 (you could ride one back in the day on a provisional licence!) and they are still loads of fun to ride. Fairly straightforward to maintain and with reasonable parts availability, the RD250 Yamaha is an enthusiasts delight, but good ones are getting hard to find. If you want to pick up a restoration project, buy the best and most complete example you can afford. Better still, a low mileage original (if you can find one!) is probably better than money in the bank as far as a fun investment is concerned. Remember though, these bikes were built to be ridden, so don't hide it away!
